On March 5, 2025, Rep. Sewell highlighted the significance of voting rights by linking it to historical events: "As we prepare to observe the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, it is clear; the fight for voting rights and for our democracy is just as urgent today as it was then." She announced her action that day, stating: "Today, with the support of every House Democrat, I reintroduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act."

She declared this action "outrageous" and vowed not to allow it without contesting it vigorously.
