WASHINGTON, D.C., March 23, 2023 – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) has successfully championed over $6.2 billion in investments for Alabama, focusing on critical national defense priorities and conservative victories. The legislation, recently passed by the Senate 74-24 and previously by the House in a bipartisan manner, is now awaiting the President's signature.
Senator Britt expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "I was glad to see Congress finally do our jobs today, and I’m grateful to send Alabamians’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars back home. This strategic funding will make key investments in Alabama’s defense capabilities and installations, rural health services, mental health research, child care, and our local communities."
The appropriations cover a wide range of areas, with specific highlights in different sectors. In the Homeland Security Appropriations Act, Senator Britt supported funding for ICE detention beds, transportation and removal of illegal aliens, and additional resources for Border Patrol and CBP officers. She also secured funding for the Coast Guard's missions and law enforcement training in Alabama.
Moreover, in the Defense Appropriations Act, Senator Britt secured significant funding for Alabama, emphasizing military readiness, defense modernization, and support for service members and their families. Investments will span various fields such as hypersonics, direct energy, cybersecurity, and quantum computing. Notably, funding for Abrams tank restoration and a substantial pay raise for military servicemembers were included.
The Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act also saw Senator Britt's influence, with allocations for medical equipment upgrades, rural health services, and support for medical facilities across Alabama. She ensured the continuation of critical provisions like the Hyde Amendment and conscience protections.
Furthermore, Senator Britt's efforts in the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act focused on fiscal responsibility, including measures to restrain IRS spending and prevent certain bans. Additionally, in the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, she supported funding to counter the influence of China and address issues like fentanyl.
Looking ahead, Senator Britt emphasized her commitment to ongoing fiscal responsibility and advocating for Alabama's interests as the FY 2025 appropriations process commences.
