WASHINGTON, D.C., May 1, 2024 – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) challenged U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona on the Biden Administration’s efforts to safeguard Jewish students on college campuses across America. Senator Britt expressed concern over the rise in antisemitic incidents on campuses and the lack of decisive action by the administration.

Senator Britt, during a Senate Appropriations Committee meeting, emphasized the need for the Department of Education to uphold Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to ensure a safe learning environment for Jewish students. She criticized the administration for failing to address the escalating antisemitic protests and threats faced by Jewish students, calling it a "national disgrace" and "a disservice to America’s future."

In a poignant exchange with Secretary Cardona, Senator Britt questioned the administration's commitment to upholding Title VI. When asked if the administration was effectively protecting Jewish students, Secretary Cardona responded with a firm "Absolutely not." Senator Britt highlighted the gravity of the situation by stating, "I am afraid that this Administration is not learning the lessons from the past."

Senator Britt also raised concerns about the Biden Administration's new Title IX rules, citing disparities in collegiate athletics. She stressed the importance of maintaining fairness and equal opportunities for female athletes, expressing worries about the proposed changes potentially favoring biological males.

Throughout the questioning, both Senator Britt and Secretary Cardona agreed on the unacceptable nature of antisemitic rhetoric and actions targeting Jewish students. Senator Britt emphasized the urgency for action, stating, "It’s disgusting and despicable." Secretary Cardona echoed her sentiments, affirming, "It’s unacceptable. I agree with you."

The exchange between Senator Britt and Secretary Cardona underscores the pressing need for concrete measures to protect Jewish students on college campuses and address antisemitism effectively. Senator Britt called for immediate action to create a safe and inclusive space for Jewish students to learn and grow, emphasizing that anything less would be unacceptable.
