Gary Palmer, serving as the U.S. Representative for Alabama's 6th district since 2015, addressed concerns surrounding the SAVE Act and its impact on voting rights through a series of tweets. Palmer, a congressman with a background from the University of Alabama, provided explanations about the proposed legislation focusing on voting regulations.
In a tweet on April 10, 2025, Palmer clarified misconceptions about the SAVE Act's effects on individuals who have changed their names. He stated, "The SAVE Act will NOT prohibit individuals from voting that have changed their name." He emphasized that voters can register without issues if they update documentation with their new name on a citizenship-proving document.
Further into the discussion, Palmer assured that "U.S. Service members deployed abroad will still be able to vote." On April 10, 2025, he noted that the SAVE Act does not modify the Uniformed Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, thereby not affecting the voting rights of service members serving overseas.
Palmer summarized his comments on the same day by explaining the purpose of the SAVE Act. He wrote, "In short, the SAVE Act is necessary to ensure only American citizens are voting in American elections." He stressed that the Act is intended to protect the integrity of elections and should not be considered voter suppression.
Palmer, who stepped into his congressional role following Spencer Bachus in 2015, is 68 years old and was born in Hackleburg, Alabama in 1954. He currently resides in Hoover.
