Hoover brothers sentenced for selling over $1 million in stolen goods online

Two brothers from Hoover have been sentenced for their involvement in an online scheme selling stolen goods. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and U.S. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Patrick Davis.

U.S. District Judge Madeline Haikala handed down the sentences: Abdurrahman Amar, aged 32, received 34 months in prison, while Yahya Amar, aged 33, was sentenced to 30 months. Both brothers pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to the interstate transportation of stolen goods in August and September 2024.

The plea agreements revealed that between January 2022 and December 2023, Abdurrahman Amar led a network of professional thieves known as "boosters." These individuals provided the Amars with new and unopened goods, particularly electronic devices and tools, which were stolen from retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

The Amars purchased these items at discounted prices from the boosters and resold them on platforms like eBay and Facebook at marked-up rates still below retail value. Throughout the operation, they conducted approximately 7,283 sales on eBay alone, generating about $1,014,191.44 in revenue. The stolen goods were then shipped to customers across the United States and internationally.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett A. Janich.
