U.S. Senator Katie Britt, alongside Senator Tim Scott and Congressman August Pfluger, has introduced the Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act. This legislation aims to streamline the permitting process for liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals, shifting jurisdiction from the U.S. Department of Energy to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Senator Britt emphasized the importance of American energy dominance for national security, stating, "This legislation to streamline the permitting process for LNG export terminals is a critical step in implementing President Trump’s America First energy agenda so foreign customers don’t turn to other suppliers, including our adversaries."

The act comes in response to what its proponents view as an ill-advised decision by the Biden administration to halt LNG export approvals during an energy crisis. The proposed legislation seeks to reverse these actions and bolster U.S. energy independence.

Senator Scott remarked on the significance of domestic energy production: "Unlocking American energy production not only plays a vital role in safeguarding our national security but is the path to lowering energy costs for families across the nation." He criticized reliance on foreign actors and expressed confidence in regaining energy independence under President Trump's leadership.

Congressman Pfluger echoed these sentiments, criticizing past restrictions on future energy exports: "President Biden spent four years pandering to progressive climate extremists... We finally have a President back in office who understands that having efficient, reliable, and affordable energy is key."

Senator Britt has consistently voiced concerns about freezing new LNG permits potentially benefiting foreign adversaries. A report highlighted that European Union countries increased their LNG imports from Russia by 7% in early 2024 compared to the previous year.

Republican senators continue efforts with President Trump to dismantle regulations they see as restrictive from recent years. Last month, Senator Britt voted against implementing a Natural Gas Tax included in Democrats' Inflation Reduction Act.
